Chicken Little

Enough already.
It’s like the “Chicken Little Effect”
So there is this flu called ‘H1N1’ or commonly known as SWINE FLU. And now the world is falling to pieces. *BEWARE: THE WORLD IS DYING!!! IT’S A PANDEMIC!!!*

Here are some Canadian facts:

  • The first H1N1 (swine flu) case in Canada was confirmed on April 29th, 2009
  • As of August 7th, 2009, the number of H1N1 (swine flu) infections in Canada is no longer being tracked. International health organizations are now only tracking the number of fatalities and in some cases the number of hospitalizations.

As of 27-Oct-09 (read about it here):

  • Canada’s total of 58 fatalities due to H1N1. 1 in 140 infected will succumb to the virus.
  • The US had 1,099 deaths resulted from H1N1. That’s 3.58 people per million. 1 in 62 infected will succumb to the virus.
  • Worldwide there have been only 6,768 fatalities. Which averages out to be 1 in 80 will die.

Where’s the pandemic?
Let me tell you about a pandemic:
Over 71,000 people die a year of heart related diseases in Canada, and over 800,000 in the US.
Over 171,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer and 75,300 may die in 2009 of cancer in Canada. The US is almost the same in numbers.

I can list many other stats … but I think I am making my point.

Governments are spending billions of dollars on immunizations for a supposed pandemic.
I am not going to say this isn’t a serious issue. Of course it is.
But is it worth the billions of dollars and ridiculous amounts of media coverage, feeding on the fears of the masses? Not at all.

In a recent poll, 59% of Canadians said they wouldn’t get the shot.
And I am one of them who won’t.
Here’s the thing.
5,310 people die each month in the US of the regular influenza and the complications that come with it: that is 174 people a day. Those stats are a few years old already!

I get my regular seasonal flu shot each year.
Do I really need it?
That’s debatable.
But one thing I do know for a fact:

If you are sick – stay the fuck home. You could be highly contagious and I don’t need your germs infecting my body, thank you very much.
If you think you have the swine flu or to be politically correct – H1N1… then get your ass to emergency.

Here are some of the symptoms in case you’ve been living under a rock:
Cough, fever, fatigue, muscle aches, sore throat, headaches, decreased appetite, runny noses, sometimes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea but the most important symptom that separates the regular influenza from H1N1… is shortness of breath. The latter is not a common symptom that is associated with influenza.

So stay home if you are sick.
Wash your hand, disinfect your surfaces regularly, cough & sneeze into your arms not hands etc… BUT STAY HOME DAMMIT if you are sick!!!

Pandemic – I don’t think so.
Something to be concerned about – yes.
Make up your own mind – but I am tired of hearing on the radio how life is coming to a halt because of H1N1. It’s the chicken little syndrome/effect.
Do not put pressure on people to get the shot.
Educate people and let them decide.  Figure out if what you are putting into your body is really necessary and even safe (read here about the chemical composition of one of the so-called preventation vaccines)

But that, afterall, could be asking too much. We are a society that thrives on drama… if it’s not one pandemic activity, it’s another or something else.

I’m tired of it.
